Yes, there is a separate battery cell for the bluetooth. It is not replaceable. The battery cell and Bluetooth are in “Sleep mode” when not activated. When activated by pushing the spray button, it transmits for one minute then goes off until activated again. In tests, the battery lasted long enough to send over 6,000 alerts. When the battery does die, the Bluetooth will not longer function and the device will have to be replaced in order to continue Bluetooth functionality.
Yes, a short, partial press of the spray actuator will click a switch that activates the alert before the spray activates. Continue pressing and the pepper spray will be activated.
Yes, the phone should be on your person or within a short distance. Bluetooth service effectiveness and distance will vary by location and signal strength. A variety of materials and objects that may be between your D.A.D.® and your phone may alter or interfere with signal strength, in some cases causing the alert not to be sent. The distance the Bluetooth will send and the accuracy of location services are beyond TigerLight’s control. The D.A.D.® should be within ten feet of your phone. In most cases, your phone will be on your person. The Bluetooth chip inside the D.A.D.® sends a signal to the D.A.D.® app on your phone. The D.A.D.® app uses the GPS in your phone and Apple or Google location services to triangulate your location at the time the alert is sent. It displays your alert to others via “Crowd Alert” and to those in your D.A.D.® app contact list, even those who may not have the app, but are in your contact list. They can receive the alert via text message and email. “Crowd Alert” can only be receive by those who have the app and have selected “Crowd Alert” in their D.A.D.® app settings.
Yes, nobody wants to receive an alert from you if you are not really in danger. For Apple iOS and Android: You can test your alert first sending a “Test Mode” alert by going to the alert page on your app. Slide over the “Test Mode” button in the upper right corner of the screen. Test pops up explaining “test mode” with a link to click at the bottom that says “Test Mode On.” Click that link, then immediately press the Send Danger Alert link in the upper left corner. Wait at least a minute for it to complete an initial “lock in” process. If it hasn’t sent the “Test Alert” within a minute, repeat the process, but only press the alert link once each time. Make sure your “I’m OK” PIN is set up so if you accidentally send an alert, you can send a “I’m OK” alert immediately. After you have completed the process on your phone, verifying the phone and app are working properly, you can complete the first two steps and then carefully push the spray actuator on the D.A.D.® 2 device with the practice canister in, just until you hear and feel a click, letting you know the Bluetooth Module has been activated. It may take two to three tries to “lock in” the module to the device. Allow at least a minute between each try. If it does not work after three tries, contact us and we will walk you through it.
At the bottom of the D.A.D.® app screen there is an “I’m OK” button. When you download your D.A.D.® app you will choose a 4-digit PIN in your settings so you can push the “I’m OK” button at the bottom of the D.A.D.® app screen, enter your private PIN and push OK. This will send another alert that tells everyone you are OK. Please do not send false alerts, ever. “Crying wolf” will only lessen the effectiveness of this amazing technology and take the police away from helping people who may actually be in danger. If continued abuse occurs, TigerLight has the right to notify you that your app service is being turned off without reimbursement for the device.
If your phone signal is good, it should send an alert. TigerLight has done extensive situational testing with a very high success rate in the many situations one might be in. For example, the device in your left hand and the phone in your right pocket, or back pocket, or backpack. Or, your attacked and the phone flies out of your hand and lands ten feet away. With good phone signals the app has a very high rate of success. The human body is made up of mostly water and RF signals do not travel well through water, so the signal will be able to establish a connection between the D.A.D.® and the phone if it is closer and there is less body mass between them. However, in our testing, the device was very reliable, even with the D.A.D.® in front and the phone in a back pack, behind. Keep in mind that if the Alert does not send, the potent pepper spray hidden inside the device is your first line of defense and is the most effective, #1 rated non-lethal personal defense technology in the world.
Every canister manufacturer recommends that it not be stored above 120 degreed F. Our canister in our other TigerLights were tested for the military by Eastern Laboratories in ten degree increments for an hour and only one canister failed after 55 minutes at 212 degrees fahrenheit. We have sprayed canisters after leaving them out in the snow all night in temperatures of about 5 degrees fahrenheit. They sprayed fine, although with slightly less force. The hotter the canister contents, the higher the pressure. The colder the canister contents, the lower the pressure. The difference is only noticeable in extreme hot and extreme cold. Although a minimum temperature is not mentioned, some say it can be as low as -5 degrees F. I suspect that our sprays from Sabre Red and Guardian PD, given that they are not water based and are non-flammable, and are both used by the military and police, may have very low freezing points. Also, given the fact that the canister is contained inside the device, creating more insulation, and is not exposed to direct sunlight or cold temperature, it is likely to withstand both higher and lower temperatures than a normal pepper spray canister.
NOTE: Although our mission is exactly the same whether college sexual assaults are 1 in 5 or 1 in 500, the study claiming that 1 in 5 college girls are sexually assaulted during 4 years of college has been refuted by many who believe the actual incidents of sexual assault are 2% rather than 20%. We also want to make clear that our citing that study on our original video introducing the D.A.D.® in not and never was a political statement as some seem to think.
There are other studies claiming the actual figure is 5% for rape and 10% for sexual assault. A much larger study of 27 Universities and 150,000 students puts the percentage at 23% for sexual assault (a little lower than 1 in 5) and 11% for rape.
Study results vary greatly by study and by school in the same study. The wording of questions, definitions, the location of the study and other study methodology will all produce varying results. However, a newer Bureau of Justice Statistics study (cited below) shows that about 1 in 50 are raped or sexually assaulted. In addition to the above factors, a University of Utah study shower that the vast majority of pepper spray manufactured grossly overstate the sprays actual strength, some by 100 times, others by ten times, making it very difficult for consumers to know what they are getting. The spray we use in the D.A.D. issued by many Department of Defense agencies and proved to be one of only two sprays that were consistent and anywhere near the claimed potency. Every batch is tested. We support the 2nd amendment and recognize the importance of firearms. However, we do not see the firearm as the “answer-all” to civilian self defense given there are millions of situations and locations in which guns are not allowed or lethal force is not justified. Additionally, many people simply do not want to carry a firearm.

I received a private comment suggesting that we have a strobe light mode on the Defense Alert Device (D.A.D.®). In fact, we have what we call a passive “panic” mode. The light assumes that when you push the “On” button, you are under attack and immediately goes to a bright strobe for 3 seconds and then to constant high mode. If you do not want it to go to the panic mode, you “tap” the button twice and it goes directly to high mode. It also has a low mode, a constant strobe mode and an SOS mode. A question emailed to TigerLight today by recent T100 purchasers and responded to by TigerLight, Inc. President and CEO, Michael Teig. We thought others may have the same question.
Question:
In the Tigerlight instructional video, the assailants don't appear to be armed. What would you advise a Tigerlight user to do if the assailant has a gun?
Response:
Tom and Jane,
That is a very good question, but also a very complicated question. It depends on many variables and there is not an answer that you can put in a user's manual.
We have had incidents with police officers when the subject had a gun and tried to kill the officer. If not for the split-second response the TigerLight® afforded the officers in those situations, the officer would likely have been shot, according to their personal accounts of those attempted murders.
On the other hand, there may be situations wherein an individual has a gun and is too far away for the spray to reach him. Maybe it’s a situation in which the subject can be talked out of pursuing a deadly force action as has also been the case.
Probably the most important thing to keep in mind is that the TigerLight® provides a stealth, rapid response to a close proximity act of aggression in situations in which you would not likely have had the time or opportunity for any other response. In these situations, it has proven to be incredibly effective.
It impairs the attacker’s visual acuity, causes respiratory distress and is extremely painful, and the TigerLight® does this much more effectively than a canister of pepper spray, due to all the reasons explained in the instructional video as well as the infomercial.
If I were close to someone and I saw them reach for a gun that I thought they intended to use on me and I could spray and move quickly out of their line of fire, I would. However, there are many possible variables that could change what I would do in any given situation.
Are there situations where it would be better to use a gun? Of course. Are their situations where it might be best not to use anything, including the TigerLight®. I’m sure there are. However, a large percentage of assaults we hear of on a daily basis, could be stopped with a TigerLight®
We see reports of incidents nearly every day in law enforcement in which officers are assaulted, or situations escalate to a level they did not need to and I ask, “Why didn’t that officer have a TigerLight® instead of a flashlight?” To me, it is patently ridiculous to think of any officer carrying a flashlight when they could have a TigerLight®.
However, I can just about guarantee that anytime I make a statement saying that “if this or that officer would have had a TigerLight® in hand, it would have been different,” there is someone who will criticize that observation saying I don’t know the exact circumstances. In some cases, that criticism would be true.
An officer was recently shot and killed here in Utah when approaching a subject in a car stop in which the occupant was suspected of being involved in a drug transaction. The subject shot and killed the officer as she approached the vehicle. She was found dead on the freeway with her flashlight in her hand.
Now, in other “similar” (None are exactly the same) situations in which an officer approached a vehicle and the occupant tried to shoot the officer, the TigerLight® has afforded the officer a split-second response, unanticipated by the assailant, that saved the officers lives, according to their reports.
However, my first thought when I heard of this officer being shot on a car stop was, “I wonder if the TigerLight® could have saved her?” I spoke with a training officer I know who is an avid TigerLight® user and huge fan of the product and he explained that she was shot with an assault rifle at a distance from the subject that would have been too far for a TigerLight® response, even if she would have had one in her hand.
We’ve all heard the cliche, “don’t take a knife (or a club, or a stun device, or a can of pepper spray) to a gun fight.” Well, that is about as ridiculous a statement as saying the TigerLight® is the best device for every possible situation.
The TigerLight® is an exceptionally practical, relatively safe and uniquely effective non-lethal means of personal protection that has the capability, if used properly, to save many lives, prevent many rapes and stop many assaults. It has proven, in law enforcement studies, to do it more effectively than any other non-lethal weapon.
It is something that most people will carry in their hand at times when they simply would not have any other weapon in their hand. So, even though, ideally, there might be a situation in which a person might say, “I’d rather have a gun,” if that person does not have the gun in hand, ready to fire when attacked, it does not matter what might be better.
The lady who was attacked at 4:30 in the afternoon in a wide open parking lot in down town Salt Lake City, was a probation officer and had a gun on her at the time she was attacked. But the situation was one in which the likelihood that someone would be that brazen as to attack and rape someone right out in the open with thousands of people around, was practically nil, so the weapon was not in her hand.
The difference is that a person is more likely to be willing to hold a TigerLight® in their hand when walking to their car than they would a gun, knife or even can of pepper spray, because it does not appear to be a weapon.
I know that any answer I give to your question will be criticized by someone who knows of some exception to about any position one could take, but we just have to use common sense and be practical. When an officer tries to minimize the significance of the TigerLight®, for whatever reason, I just have to say, look at the results. Five hundred officers used it on 147 violent subjects. It had an unprecedented 96% stop rate on 2.6 subjects at a time, with no significant injuries to officers or subjects.
I could go on, but I hope this helps somewhat. The key is to have the TigerLight® in hand, thumb in the right position, should an attack occur. We are not saying that the TigerLight® is the replacement for all other weapons. However, even if you have a concealed carry permit and have a gun on you, there may be many situations in which use of force is required and justified, but lethal force is neither required, not justified. That is when a TigerLight® is likely the best option there is.
